Thanksgiving is a busy day, and little ones can get restless while the grown-ups cook. These crafts and activities are simple, low-prep and toddler-friendly, so you can use them the week before or right in the middle of the chaos.
Quick safety note: stay with your toddler during crafts, and use washable, non-toxic supplies. Keep small items like googly eyes and buttons away from kids who still put things in their mouths.
Easy crafts
- Handprint turkey. Trace your toddler’s hand on paper and let them color the feathers. Add a face to the thumb.
- Leaf rubbings. Put a leaf under a sheet of paper and rub the side of a crayon over it.
- Paper plate turkey. Let them color a paper plate, then glue on paper feathers.
- Fall leaf collage. Collect leaves outside, then stick them onto contact paper taped sticky side out.
- Thankful tree. Draw a bare tree on paper and add paper leaves with things your family is thankful for.
- Pumpkin painting. Paint a small pumpkin with washable paint.
Sensory and play
- Pumpkin scoop. Cut open a pumpkin and let them scoop out the inside with a big spoon.
- Pretend turkey dinner. Set out play food and plates and let them host the meal.
- Corn and oat bin. Fill a bin with dry oats and add scoops and cups. Skip it if your child still tastes everything.
- Leaf pile jump. If you have leaves outside, rake a pile for jumping.
Activities while you cook
- Kitchen helper job. Let them wash vegetables, tear lettuce or stir a bowl with supervision.
- Set the table. Give them napkins or placemats to put at each seat.
- Thankful chat. Ask them one thing they are thankful for and write it down.
- Card for family. Draw a card for a grandparent or friend.
- Thanksgiving book basket. Gather a few holiday picture books for quiet time.
Tips for a smoother day
- Prep one or two crafts ahead, so you can hand them out when you need a break.
- Keep expectations low. Toddler crafts are about the process, not the final product.
- Use a tray or a tablecloth to make cleanup easier.
- Save a couple of ideas for the afternoon, when energy dips.
